Autumn in Solin: a peaceful escape near Split, away from the city crowds
Dalmatia is most often associated with the height of summer, but perhaps its true character is best discovered once the hottest months have passed. The days are still pleasant enough for walking and exploring, the pace slows down, and familiar places once again offer room to pause and unwind.
Autumn is therefore a wonderful time to spend a few days in Solin. Close enough to Split for an easy visit, yet surrounded by history, greenery and experiences that make it unnecessary to fill every day with excursions.
At Salona Palace Hotel, a stay like this can begin without much planning.

A morning in ancient Salona
One of the special features of staying at Salona Palace Hotel is its location immediately next to the archaeological site of ancient Salona.
Instead of planning a separate excursion, you can begin your day with breakfast at the hotel and continue with a walk through the remains of the former Roman city. During the autumn months, when temperatures are more comfortable for walking, Salona is particularly enjoyable to explore at an unhurried pace.
The remains of basilicas, Roman baths, a theatre and an amphitheatre reveal just part of the story of what was once the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia. It is worth setting aside a few hours for your first visit, but the hotel’s proximity also makes it easy to return during your stay.
Split is close, but it does not have to set the pace of your holiday
Staying in Solin does not mean missing out on Split. Quite the opposite.
Diocletian’s Palace, the Peristyle, the Riva waterfront and the historic city centre are all close enough for a few hours in the city, lunch, an evening stroll or an entire day of exploring.
The difference is that afterwards, you return to a completely different atmosphere.
You do not have to spend every moment of your holiday in the middle of the action. One day can be dedicated to Split, another to Salona, and a third simply to the hotel and relaxation.
This kind of itinerary is particularly suited to autumn, when travelling no longer needs to feel like a race between beaches, landmarks and visiting as many places as possible in a single day.
A day without an itinerary
Not every great day of travelling is the one in which you see the most.
Sometimes, it is enough to wake up a little later, enjoy a leisurely breakfast and leave a few hours without any plans. At Salona Palace Hotel, such a day might include time at the wellness and spa, a massage or a relaxing coffee, followed by lunch or dinner at Tusculum Restaurant.
If the weather is pleasant, you can spend the rest of the day walking through Solin. If not, it is a good reason to stay at the hotel and enjoy the facilities that often get overlooked during a more active holiday.
Autumn naturally changes the pace of a holiday, and sometimes that is exactly what we need.

Solin has a story beyond ancient Salona
Although ancient Salona is its best-known historical site, Solin is much more than a starting point for exploring Roman ruins.
Along the Jadro River, another important chapter of Croatian history unfolded. Gospin Otok, the Hollow Church and other historical sites bear witness to the periods that followed long after the days of ancient Salona.
There is also everyday Solin, with its riverside walking paths and places that can be discovered without a list of attractions in hand.
It is precisely this combination of different historical periods that makes Solin worth exploring beyond a single short visit.

Autumn leaves more time to enjoy the experience
In summer, we often know exactly what to expect from a holiday in Dalmatia. The sea, sunshine and long days naturally shape the rhythm of our stay.
Autumn leaves more room for a different kind of experience.
You can explore the history of Salona, spend a few hours in Split, return for a massage or simply leave part of the day unplanned. If you feel like venturing further, Salona Palace Hotel can also serve as a starting point for exploring other parts of Central Dalmatia.
And if you do not feel like going anywhere, you do not have to.
Sometimes, the greatest luxury of having a few days off is the freedom not to plan every last hour.
A few days between history, the city and relaxation
Salona Palace Hotel brings together everything that makes an autumn getaway particularly appealing: a historical site right next door, Split within easy reach, and a restaurant and wellness facilities to return to after a day of exploring.
This is why Solin is more than just a place to spend the night while visiting Split.
It can be a place from which to discover this part of Dalmatia at a slower pace, while leaving some time simply to relax.
Perhaps autumn is the perfect season to experience it this way.
